Use of Articles: an, a, the


1. An

Use an before words starting with the sound of vowels:

a, e, i, o, u

an apple, an egg, an ice-cream, an orange, an umbrella

Exception:

a university, a union


2. A

Use a before words starting with the sound of consonants:

b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z

a bag, a cat, a dog, a frog, a goat, a hotel, a jacket, a kite, a lion, a monkey, a papaya, a queue, a rat, a ship, a tiger, a van, a watch, a xylophone, a yacht, a zebra

Exception:

an hour, an honest man


3. The

Use the before a famous thing, specific place or thing and superlative adjectives.

the sun, the moon, the earth, the Taj Mahal, the Ganga river, the Everest mountain 

Use the after a preposition

in the room, on the roof, at the gate, with the ball
